This temple was built at the beginning of the Kamakura period (12th/13th century) by the powerful Kume clan who ruled the local region. It is the oldest wooden structure in all of Kumamoto Prefecture. The Amida Sanzon statues housed inside display distinct stylistic influences from Kyoto, thereby indicating a link between the temple and Kyoto.

Hachisho-ji Amida-do is a cultural property designated by the prefecture, with three columns of girders and three columns of beams. Shafts and braids retain their original shape. Inside the Amida-do there is a nationally designated important cultural property, in which a wooden Amida Nyorai and a two-sided samurai statue made in 1490 are enshrined.
