Ganjoji is the family temple of the Sagara clan. During the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries), it was a highly prestigious temple that supervised the various temples of the Hitoyoshi Kuma region. Behind the temple stand the graves of generation upon generation of the lords of the Sagara clan and their relatives. It is an impressive cemetery which memorializes this great family and its many great leaders.
