The Unsun Karuta card game was widely enjoyed throughout Japan during the Edo period. When the game was banned as a form of gambling by the Shogunate government in the latter half of the Edo period (end of the 19th century), the rules of play continued to be orally passed down in the Hitoyoshi Kuma region.
