Revelers in Kuma tend to break out into these traditional folk songs once the intoxicating effects of the local shochu begin to take hold. A number of different songs exist, each having been passed down by the common folk of the region during their daily activities. An All-Japan Kuma Folk Song Contest is held every year in Hitoyoshi.
