Koshin stone monuments date back as far as the Sengoku period, when the Koshin faith, a folk faith with roots in Chinese Taoism, was very popular. Today, many Koshin monuments in various shapes exist throughout the Hitoyoshi Kuma region. There are about 600 scattered throughout the region, and they signify the spiritual and financial wealth of the common folk.
